DirecTV Runs Contest to Name ‘Ultimate Displaced Fan’

DirecTV is looking to drive interest in its National Football League Sunday Ticket subscription deal for out-of-market games with a contest to identify the “Ultimate Displaced Fan” among America’s gridiron fanatics.

Fans can post essays, photos or videos attesting to their singular displaced devotion to their NFL team at DirecTV.com/NFL through Nov. 30. A panel of judges will evaluate the submissions for their creativity and “the example of dedication” they display to their respective teams.

The winner gets a trip for two and two tickets to Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, FL. He or she will get to meet this year’s Super Bowl MVP, Giants quarterback Eli Manning, and player from his or her favorite NFL team (if it’s not the Giants). The winner also can play with celebrities and star athletes in DirecTV’s Celebrity Beach Bowl flag football game in Tampa during Super Bowl week. And the winner will receive their own media tour where they’ll rub elbows with NFL stars while doing interviews at the Super Bowl media center.

“We’re expecting some very interesting and creative submissions,” said DirecTV spokesman Robert Mercer.

A satellite media tour featuring Washington Redskins standout Jason Taylor commences on Friday, and should jog interest in the contest and DirecTV, which carries the Sunday Ticket package exclusively. The $299 season package enables NFL fans in any city to see a 14 NFL games live each Sunday.

The primary appeal is for the so-called “displaced” fan, a New York Giants fan living in Nevada, for example. In fact, DirecTV has identified Las Vegas among the prime displaced fan locales in the country, boasting fans of the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers in big numbers, along with Des Moines, Iowa (Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings) and the Orlando-Daytona, FL, area (Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions).

The DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket subscription continues to be the most popular sports subscription DirecTV offers, according to Mercer, who said DirecTV declines to specify or confirm numbers. Satellite industry sources estimate Sunday Ticket draws between 1.5 and 2 million subscribers.

This season, DirecTV is providing enhanced high definition carriage of 180 games for its $99 Sunday Ticket “SuperFan” package, an extension of the 14-game, $299 basic package. DirecTV’s Red Zone coverage returns this season, offering an HD view of the action when either team is on the verge of scoring from the 20-yard “red zone” outside each end zone.
