Walgreens appoints new chief merchandising officer and head of digital commerce

Pharmacy retail chain Walgreens announced two leadership changes this month: It appointed Tracey Koller to chief merchandising officer and Sharmila Sudhakar to group vice president and head of digital commerce.

Walgreens expects these new leaders will “significantly contribute” to its turnaround efforts, the retailer said in the announcement.

Walgreens reported disappointing Q3 2024 earnings results in June 2024, that were not in line with its expectations. The retailer then outlined a strategic turnaround plan including closing underperforming stores, building up its loyalty program and eliminating national brands to redeploy SKUs toward its own brands. The plan also includes investing in industry talent and restructuring its operations.

“With their strong track records of delivering results in omnichannel solutions and merchandising, I know they will be critical contributors to our growth and success as we deliver an efficient, highly relevant customer experience,” said chief customer officer Tracey Brown in the press release.

Koller will be responsible for leading merchandising strategy across all categories, and leading product mix, supplier relationships and merchandising operations. Koller’s resume includes executive positions at at Party City, Target, Whole Foods and News Corp.

Sudhakar will be responsible for driving Walgreens’ digitally initiated revenue growth, including retail products, pharmacy, photo services and health services, and strengthening digital engagement through omnichannel solutions. Sudhakar’s resume includes executive positions at Tailored Brands, Walmart, Tile and Gap.

Koller and Sudhakar will begin their roles at the end of August.
