The Sci Fi Channel is giving videophones a new name via a product placement deal on the network’s popular science fiction series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
The videophone, developed by communications service provider 8×8, Inc., will be featured in upcoming episodes of the hit TV shows. Through the product placement deal, viewers can learn how to use the device.
“When Stargate fans see how great the Packet8 videophone works on their favorite show, they will be motivated to purchase one of their own to feel more connected with the program as well as with their family and friends,” said Huw Rees, VP-marketing and sales for 8×8.
To further boost the shows and the product, 8×8 has launched an online sweepstakes offering consumers the chance to win a videophone and service. To enter, consumers must complete an entry form online at Packet8.net. Consumers can also test their knowledge about the Stargate series during the entry process.
One grand-prize winner will receive a trip for two to the sets of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and two Packet8 videophones with six months of free service. In addition, the top winner has the chance to make videophone calls to the set and have “video visits” with the shows’ main characters. Seven second-place winners will receive Stargate SG-1 DVD sets and five third-place winners will get two months of free Packet8 Internet phone service.
The sweepstakes is open to consumers 18 and older and runs through Aug. 31. Internet materials support.
