NBA Ties Fitness Drive to ‘Got Milk?’ Campaign

The National Basketball Association is launching a new fitness initiative in collaboration with the “Got Milk?” Body By Milk Campaign, with NBA star Chris Paul and WNBA star Diana Taurasi as the poster players.

Paul and Taurasi, both All-Stars in their respective leagues, are the latest athletes to wear the tell-tale milk moustaches in the familiar TV spots. They will be the point players for the NBA’s “Get Fit By Finals” Challenge to encourage teens of all activity levels to be active for at least one hour each day and drink three glasses of low-fat or fat-free milk daily.

Teens can join the NBA program for a chance to win various prizes, including sports equipment and a VIP experience at the 2009 NBA Finals. Participating schools also have a chance to win a gym makeover by rallying their students to get fit.

“Milk makes a great choice after exercise because it contains a mix of nutrients that help muscles recover and refuel, which may help active people get back in the game,” said Tara Gidus, RD, a nutrition consultant to the Orlando Magic, in a statement.

Teens who sign up on the site will receive a Personal Fitness Tracker so they can document their progress. They’ll be able to watch exclusive videos on nutrition and fitness topics featuring NBA and WNBA players and can also get video tips from them on behavior modifications they can adopt to keep themselves fit.

A Get Fit widget on the site enables access to weekly videos, daily drills and a link to their Personal Fitness Tracker from their own social network page or desktop.

The program is the brainchild of NBA Fit, the league’s health and fitness initiative.
