All those in the digital space—which is just about every marketer—know about Mary Meeker and her annual report on digital trends.
Her latest report, 2017 Internet Trends Report, is out. It’s a massive 355-page report that many marketers rely on as a deep dive into fresh trends in the digital space. Meeker covers 10 areas: Global Internet Trends, Online Advertising (+ Commerce), Interactive Games, Media, China Internet, India Internet, Global Public/Private Internet Companies, Macro Thoughts, Healthcare and The Cloud.
There are a number of experts and others who do the hard work by reviewing the report to pull out key trends to share with marketers who often don’t have the time to spend pouring over all the details.
Brenda Stoltz from Forbes has boiled down the report to 14 trends you should keep top of mind. Some trends may not be surprising, like the fact that smartphone sales are slowing. Others you might find remarkable, for example, that Internet ad revenue has finally surpassed TV ad revenue in America.
Among the 14 trends, Stoltz talks about how ads are making the move to mobile, how Google and Facebook rein in advertising and how social media ad platforms are providing more insights than ever.
Another report from TechCrunch pulled 56 trends it views are key highlights from Meeker’s report. Among the highlights are:
• Global Internet user growth is flat
• Mobile pushes steady Internet usage growth
• Mobile ad blocking skyrockets
• Advertisers demand better targeting and measurement
• Social platforms work to drive purchases through ads
• Snap is succeeding with ads based on shared images
• Humans created about 14 zettabytes of information last year
