Harris Interactive Reports Revenue Increase

Harris Interactive, the Rochester, NY-based research firm, reported second-quarter revenue of $33.3 million, a 10% increase over the same period last year.

Net income totaled $1.2 million, compared with $1 million in the second quarter of 2002.

But the company was hardly satisfied with the results. “We believe that the uncertainty and confusion surrounding the FTC’s national do-not-call registry, dragged our telephone-based revenue lower than expected and caused us to miss both revenue and profit expectations,” said CEO Gordon S. Black, in a statement.

Black continued, “Industry sources indicate that telephone response rates have plummeted, and respondent irritation over receiving market research calls has recently grown dramatically. Therefore we believe that the downturn in telephone revenue will not only continue, but may accelerate.”

Internet-based revenue amounted to $17.0 million, a 57% increase over last year, with traditional revenue declining by 19% to $3.5 million.
