Ice cream lovers have voted, and the winning “American Idol”-themed Edy’s Slow Churned flavor is Take the Cake.

Some 600,000 online votes were tallied in the five-month-long promotion, which included a sweepstakes, the company said. One grand-prize winner received a trip for two to attend the “American Idol” finale, a plasma screen TV and a visit from former “Idol” contestant Ace Young.

Take the Cake, one of five flavors up for a vote, beat out Choc ‘N Roll, Caramel, Hollywood Cheesecake, Soulful Sundae Cone and Triple Talent (Promo Xtra, March 14, 2007).

The winning ice cream received 32% of online votes, the company said. The new flavor will hit stores in early 2008.

The promotion was handled in-house. TV spots supported the contest.

Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream is one of a handful of “American Idols” sponsors, including Pringles, Tanger Outlets and Nestlé candy. The show’s on-air sponsors include Coca-Cola Co., Cingular Wireless and Ford Motor Co.
