Facebook is changing the way its 900 million monthly users engage with brands on its platform.
It is opening up its Messenger app, “so that any outside company could create a bot capable of interacting with people through the chat program,” this article from the New York Times explains.
Chatbots are pieces of software that use artificial intelligence to carry on a conversation about say, what type of new dress you are shopping for and will make suggestions based on your reactions to the choices it serves up to you.
Facebook is working with start-ups like mobile shopping company, Spring, as well as established brands like 1-800-Flowers and CNN. How the bots work and how some of the early adopters, like CNN, are used are explained by TechCrunch.
