Yahoo Touchdown Dance Contest Fuels Football Fantasies

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Yahoo Sports has launched an online touchdown contest to spark interest in its fantasy football products.

The contest centers on flamboyant Cincinnati Bengals running back Chad Johnson, Yahoo’s “cover athlete” for fantasy football, who is renowned for his creative touchdown celebrations. Fans have until Aug. 20 to submit 30-second videos of their own celebrative touchdown dances, spikes or flips to win a chance to meet Johnson at the Bengals’ training camp facility.

A Yahoo Sports committee will select five finalists from the video submitted, and those videos will then be posted at Sports.Yahoo.com/ChadJohnsonContest. Fans will vote on the videos between Aug. 22 and Sept. 4. The winner of Chad Johnson’s Touchdown Celebration Showdown will be announced on Sept. 6.

This is the first fantasy football contest Yahoo has run with user-generated content. It coincides with the start of registration for Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football ’07, which offers fantasy enthusiasts a menu of free and paid products.

Yahoo Sports is perceived to be the most popular fantasy football site, with CBS SportsLine and ESPN as its prime competitors. Yahoo declines to reveal numbers for its fantasy football universe.

Fantasy players of the free products can sign up for paid features, such as a StatTracker statistics update tool for $9.95, an insider newsletter at $14.99 and a $9.99 draft kit. Fans can also opt for Yahoo Fantasy Football Plus, which offers a $24.95 registration fee for individuals and $124.95 for leagues of up to 20 teams.
