With Sales Up, Brookstone Anticipates Catalog Circulation Increase

Brookstone, which traditionally takes a loss during the first three quarter of the year and turns a profit during the holiday quarter, reported a third-quarter net loss of $6.7 million. This was a larger loss than the $5.9 million reported during third quarter 2003. During the same period, its sales rose from $73.7 million to $85.4 million. The quarter ended Oct. 30.

During the third quarter, same-store sales rose 4.3% over last year’s third-quarter level, with retail operations getting a boost from additional locations. Direct-to-consumer sales increased by 17.9%, to $15.8 million.

“Our direct marketing efforts remain an important component to our success,” said Michael Anthony, they Merrimack, NH-based gift firm’s president. “In the fourth quarter, we will increase the circulation of the Brookstone catalog to more than 19 million books, from 11 million in 2003, a proven strategy that delivers additional incremental traffic and sales to our retail stores and generates revenue and profit to all three sales channels.”
