Lynn Coddington won college tuition for her son at the University of Vermont. Machele Web earned a round of golf for four at the Pelican Hill Golf Club. They were two of 16,826 winners in the Visa’s Magic Moments promotion that ran during Christmas. Visa had enlisted partners like Best Buy and Dell Computer in the effort, in which consumers using Visa cards got purchases for free if the transactions occurred during specified one-second periods chosen daily.

The promotion produced some interesting highlights:

* Moment with the most transactions: December 8, when 1,332 card holders won prizes in the same second.

* Largest purchase: a $5,998.81 tab in a Virginia auto repair shop.

* Smallest purchase: a 32-cent stamp at a post office.
