The Postal Rate Commission is about to recommend extending a postal service experimental catalog ride-along service.
The service, which began last February, is set to expire on Feb. 26.
In the experimental ride-along program, the USPS shaves between 5 cents and 20 cents off the base price of a 3.3-ounce catalog normally sent by Standard Mail. The ride-alongs are unopposed industry groups.
How much the cost is actually reduced by having a catalog ride along with a poly-bagged magazine will depend on the machinability of the host mailing and the mailer’s level of sortation, such as 3-to-5 digit ZIP code or carrier route sequencing.
While the catalog would ride along with a magazine for a dime, the magazine’s publisher would still pay the regular Periodicals postage rate for the publication.
