Who’s Who? Not Us A recent mailing from Marquis Who’s Who set our heart aflutter: Were we finally being recognized in the biographical directory for our contributions to direct response journalism?
Alas, the enclosed document was not our nomination notice, but rather a pitch letter offering to sell us the book’s most recent edition for around $360.
A line in the second paragraph of the cover letter informed us that “In a world of laptops, cell phones, faxes, e-mail and speeds of Mock 2, where can you turn when it needs to be right the first time?”
Well, we can’t turn to Who’s Who. We were never great fluid mechanics students, but we do remember that Mach 2, not Mock 2, is a measure of supersonic speed. Sorry, boys, you were wrong the first time.
This misstatement, coupled with its unfortunate placement, gave us a prime opportunity to “mock one,” and that one is Marquis Who’s Who.
