People Magazine Tries Loyalty Program

Time, Inc. has begun a loyalty-marketing program to boost People Magazine newsstand sales.

People Rewards Plus puts a code on each newsstand copy of the weekly. Readers give their e-mail address to register at www.peoplerp.com, then enter codes to accrue points that can be redeemed for DVDs, software, Time, Inc. magazine subscriptions and other merchandise. Members pay a $2 redemption fee for each reward shipped. The program is set to run through May. SynapseConnect, Inc., Stamford, CT, handles.

Time is using People Rewards Plus to sample its other publications. Members can get a free one-year subscription to Real Simple or In Style, with automatic renewal at the end of the year.

Newsstand sales account for about 40% of People’s average paid circulation of 3.6 million copies.
