Penney Catalog Sales Decline by 31.6%

J.C. Penney Co., Inc. reported a 31.6% decline in November catalog sales–to $295 million–compared with the same period last year.

The decline was partly due to the elimination of catalogs in retail promotional events, the company said.

In addition, e-commerce sales fell to $30 million, compared with $39 million last November. These sales are included in the catalog category.

However, online sales stand at $240 million for the first 43 weeks of 2001, compared with $206 million for the same period last year.

The Plano, TX-based retailer also reported an 6% increase in comparable store sales, and a 7.1% hike in comparable drugstore sales.

The firm acknowledged that the sales were at “the lower end of management’s expectations,” but it hopes to recoup in December, the most important month of the fourth quarter.
