A total of $16.2 billion worth of goods and services were placed online in 1999, nearly quadrupling the $4.5 billion spent the year before, according to a survey by market research firm BizRate.com, based in Los Angeles. Online buyers placed more than 176 million retail orders, an almost 300% increase over 1998.
These findings are based on the experiences of more than 1.3 million online buyers who participated in point-of-sale surveys at thousands of commercial Web sites.
The report also revealed that the average household income for online buyers in fourth quarter of 1999 was $81,200. In addition, 58% of all new online orders placed by women.
