JCPenney Says Online December Sales Increased “Strongly”

J. C. Penney Company, Inc. said its comparable store sales decreased 3.8% for the five-week period ended Jan. 2.

Internet sales through jcp.com increased strongly in December, with high-teen increases in orders for the key holiday shopping periods of Black Friday weekend and the week before Christmas.

Total company sales in December slipped by 2.4 percent. While the company did not break out sales by channel, total sales amounted to $2.89 billion during the month, down from $2.96 billion during December 2008.
