Internet marketing companies cut 4,899 jobs in August, 44% less than July’s 8,697 and the lowest figure since last August when 4,193 positions were eliminated, according to outplacement agency Gray & Christmas Inc.
In other findings, 21 online marketing firms closed during August, a 133% increase over the nine closures recorded in July. So far this year, 248 Internet marketing firms have shut down.
“The decline in job cuts may not necessarily be an indication of an imminent turnaround,” said CEO John A. Challenger, in a statement. “It is more likely that these firms are running out of employees to cut.”
Since January, Internet marketing firms have cut 87,795 jobs, more than double the 41,515 cuts they made in all of 2000.
