Interactive Movie Trailers; A New Way to Promote Films

Moviegoers will have a whole new way to experience and interact with promotional movie trailers online beginning this week with the debut of the SmarTrailer.

The new technology allows viewers to watch a trailer in its entirety or explore particular areas of interest in the film by clicking on picture windows that appear as the trailer plays.

For example, Touchstone Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer’s adventure National Treasure is playing on Yahoo Movies. The trailer has nine unique windows that lead viewers to one-minute information “pods” that delve into specific topics related to the film, the historical facts behind the story and the filmmaking process. Viewers can explore “The Treasure is Real” section, which offers expert testimony from professional treasure hunters; the “Knights of Templar” section talks about the great wealth amassed by the secretive medieval band of knights and where it might have gone after they fled Europe; other pods cover topics such as “Benjamin Franklin,” “The Money Pit,” “The Freemasons,” “The Clues Around Us,” “The Declaration of Independence,” “Secrets and Spies” and “Real Locations.” The SmarTrailer can also be seen at www.nationaltreasure.com.

National Treasure stars Nicholas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, third-generation treasure hunter. The movie opens nationwide on Nov. 24.
