FATTENING UP ON SNACKS

General Mills, Minneapolis, expanded its snack portfolio by acquiring Gardetto’s Bakery, Milwaukee, whose flavored pretzels and baked snack mixes accounted for $100 million in sales last year. The Mills likes Gardetto’s strong brand recognition and extensive vending, c-store, and non-grocery distribution, which could benefit brands like Betty Crocker fruit snacks, Chex Mix, and Nature’s Valley granola bars. Family-owned Gardetto’s likes the marketing muscle the Mills will put behind its brand.
