According to Experian Hitwise, an analysis of the top 1,000 search terms for 2010 found that “facebook” was the top-searched overall term for the second year in a row, accounting for 2.11 percent of all searches. Four variations of “facebook” made their way into the top 10 terms of 2010, accounting for 3.48 percent of searches overall, up 207 percent from 2009.

“Analysis of the search terms revealed that social networking-related terms dominated the results, accounting for 4.18 percent of the top 50 searches,” according to Hitwise.
YouTube-related terms accounted for 1.12 percent of all searches in the U.S. in 2010, while Google terms accounted for 0.63 percent, Craigslist terms accounted for 0.62 percent and AOL terms accounted for 0.34 percent.
Hitwise also notes that Facebook was the top-visited site in 2010, accounting for 8.93 percent of all U.S. visits between January and November. Google was second with 7.19 percent of visits, followed by Yahoo Mail with 3.52 percent, Yahoo with 3.30 percent and YouTube with 2.65 percent.
Kim Kardashian was the top personality ranked by searches, followed by Oprah, Rush Limbaugh, Miley Cyrus and Glenn Beck.
Lady Gaga was the top music search term, followed by Justin Bieber, Eminem, Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson.
Tiger Woods was the top-searched athlete of the year, while the Dallas Cowboys led the Sports category.
Bret Michaels, Tiger Woods and Sandra Bullock were the top-searched people in the News and Media category, according to Hitwise.
According to Google Zeitgeist 2010, “chatroulette” was the fastest rising query of 2010, followed by “ipad,” “justin bieber,” “nicki minaj,” “friv,” “mixer,” “katy perry,” “twitter,” “gamezer” and “facebook.”
