DMA Urges Senate to Make Net Tax Permanent

The Direct Marketing Association has called on the Senate to quickly pass a bill that would make the Internet Tax Moratorium, which was set to expire on Nov. 1st, permanent.

The current moratorium, known as the Internet Tax Freedom Act, prohibits taxes on Internet access, double taxation of Web purchases and taxes that treat online sales differently from offline sales.

“Making the Internet Tax Moratorium permanent will undoubtedly allow the Internet to continue to grow as a vehicle for global communication, education, and commerce, and is essential if we want to keep America at the forefront of this still-emerging technology,” said senior vice president Jerry Cerasale in a statement.

Efforts to extend the tax ban reportedly are down by concerns that making it permanent would curb the ability of state and local governments to collect traditional telecommunication taxes.
