David L. Mathews, Circuit City’s executive vice president of merchandising, services and marketing, is leaving the retailer after less than a year in the position.
Mathews, who will remain with Circuit City through the end of the month, will become president of Orchard Brands, a holding company owned by private equity firm Golden Gate Capital.
Philip J. Schoonover, Circuit City’s chairman and CEO, will handle the merchandising, services and marketing in the interim. As for a permanent replacement, the retailer is “weighting its options,” a company spokesperson said.
Mathews, 47, joined Circuit City in 2005 as senior vice president, president Circuit City Direct, overseeing the operations of the company’s Web site, customer call centers, business-to-business sales, direct consumer marketing and catalog business. He was promoted in February to his current position.
Prior to that, Mathews worked as president and chief operating officer of Crutchfield Corp., a direct marketer of consumer electronics. He also worked three years at Dell Computer Corp. in various marketing roles, including director of global marketing and director of consumer marketing.
