Winning Super Bowl Ad Created for Under $2k!

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

So, you’re gonna shell out $3,000,000 to buy a Super Bowl spot. You better hire the best creative talent available to produce and direct the spot, making sure you get the biggest bang for your spend, right? Well, it just so happens that the biggest hit, commercial-wise, was done for Doritos by two guys who spent under $2,000 to make it. That’s correct, based on polls, recall and buzz (not sales, but that’s a whole other discussion), these two Joe’s (well, actually only one’s named Joe), Joe and Dave Herbert from Indiana upstaged the creative “pros” by winning with a budget spend of under $2k. This presents a huge “image” problem for, well, em, image makers.

I hope you all chime in on this. It’s a subject that deserves more discussion, analysis and debate. I know my 14-year old son thought that the spot was the best of the bunch, long before his Dad knew who did the commercial. Talk about a blow to credibility. Ouch.
