Will Congress Consider USPS Pre-Payment of Retiree Benefits?

As the U.S. Postal Service continues to lose billions of dollars annually, the largest contributing factor to that unfortunate bottom line has been its obligation to pre-pay retiree health benefits to the tune of more than $5 billion a year.

That was the result of the 2006 Postal Reform legislation. Since then, many have asked Congress to address that obligation as it has catapulted the USPS down a seemingly bottomless pit of financial instability.

Just last week, Postal Regulatory Commission Chairman Ruth Y. Goldway pushed for adjustments in the Postal Service
