Stephen Spangler Quote on the Cutting Room Floor

Posted on by Tim Parry

Let my loss be your gain, readers!

Once in a while we close an issue of MULTICHANNEL MERCHANT, some content hits the cutting room floor. Really, it happens, it’s just just what some guy at a bar told you about being in a deleted scene in Star Trek (that’s just a pick-up line!).

One piece that hit the floor came from Steve Spangler of Steve Spangler Science. And it came from an ACCM session about social media. And if there was ever a reason why merchants should blog, it’s this figure right here:

Spangler gets good penetration for his company via his blog. Spangler says that only 4% of traffic to SteveSpanglerScience.com came from his blog in 2008. But at the same time, that traffic also accounted for 12% of his sales.

Just think about that. 12% of Steve Spangler Science’s sales came from the blog. That’s not necessarily because of volume, but for content. That includes choosing the right keywords and making your message pull the reader instead of push.

Of course it helps a little, too, that Steve Spangler has become a household name, and consumers may be leaving out the word “science” when trying to find him on the Web. I didn’t ask Spangler for his analytics.

What else did Spangler say?
