Jeter Filter Could Hurt Marketers Now and Later

Posted on by Tim Parry

Jeter FilterOh, man, the
Jeter Filter has been invented! If you’re a hater and you use Google Chrome, the app will remove Derek Jeter from the World Wide Web.

This could be one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. And at the same time, this could be one of the scariest. Picture you’re a marketer and Derek Jeter is your spokesperson. Your message is not going to make it to the Jeter haters. And if you’re someone like Ford Motor Company, whose brand loyalty extends beyond Yankees Universe (as they call it), an audience of Ford fans is going to miss your campaign.

(and that’s a shame, too, especially when you see how Dorkalicious DJ3K looks in the Chrysler/Eminem ripoff commercial below… Unless you installed Jeter Filter)

If Rob Spectre can build this app, who’s to say Spectre or another tech genius can’t build one to wipe your brand, ecommerce site, or your personality off the Internet? It’s scarey, but it is certainly a possibility.

If you don’t believe me, ask the users of the FireFox plugin Adblock Plus. It can happen, and your own display ads have been blocked.
