Is This a Sharp Promotion?

Posted on by Beth Negus Viveiros

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not an expert on the world of promotions. Still, that won’t stop me from commenting on the Christmas tree shaped tower of TVs Sharp built in Grand Central Terminal to plug the new Aquos LCD sets.

I’m sure it looks neat. I do wonder how successful the promotion will be in actually selling televisions. I mean, I’m sure my two young sons would stop and stare at it for hours. But last time I checked, neither of them had access to enough cash to snap up some nifty new electronics.

Would New Yorkers, however, give it a second look? Maybe, maybe not. I lived and worked in the city for several years myself, and recall jaded city residents walking by things like movie sets and clowns teetering down Park Avenue on stilts with out even looking up. So a bunch of TVs? I dunno.

The theme of the promotion, by the way, is “hope.” As in, “hope you don’t lose your job so you can buy a new big screen TV,” I guess. (Sharp is making a donation to the charity HOPE, so there is a good deeds tie-in.)

Still, anything that makes anyone’s commute a little more merry and bright is a good thing.
