Have You Huggied Your Snuggie Today?

Posted on

Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there are tons of commercials airing in prime time that, a year ago, would have been relegated to 2am on “Who’s the Boss?” reruns. The crippled economy has left holes in the broadcast schedule now being filled by former castoffs and attic dwellers. By far the best of these is the Snuggie.

The Snuggie, if by now you are still unaware, is a clever solution to a problem you never knew you had: a blanket with arms, so you’ll never be “trapped inside” your blanket, as the commerical explains. It is apparently marketed to couch-bound blobs who, due to limited mental capacity, or, more likely, slothful degeneration of primary motor skills, can no longer wriggle out from under a cheap fleece blanket. The tv spot is a classic infomercial that, just before christmas last year, found itself picking up available prime time slots that created this generation’s Pet Rock.

They sold out before Christmas. Back-ordered for 2 months. And have inspired the kind of grassroots public support big brands spend millions trying to achieve: youtube parodies, facebook groups and 701,000 other google hits, most of them trying to figure out how a backwards monk-robe has captured America’s hearts and wallets. (youtube WTF Blanket for the real reaction–just don’t do it from your office computer.)

And now the real sign of status: an open facebook invitation for the first-ever Snuggie Pub Crawl, which will undoubtedly resemble “Night of the Living Dead” meets “Monty Python.”
