Front Page News

The Old Grey Lady is getting some new accessories, in the form of front-page advertising.

Yep, the New York Times and sister publication The Boston Globe will begin running ads on the cover.

As someone with an understanding of the trouble times all publishers face, I get the economic thinking behind this. Hey, any port in a storm if the port has money, right? But as someone who began their journalism career as an ink stained wretch at a weekly, it makes me a little sad to see the church/state wall crumble just a little bit more.

Reuters’ MediaFile blog has an interesting piece on the situation. What do you think? Will front page advertising help save daily newspapers, or are they just moving around the deck chairs on the Titanic?
