An Inaugural Event

Posted on by Melissa Dowling

Where were you during Barack Obama’s inauguration? I was in Miami Beach, perched on a white leather sofa in the lobby lounge of the just-refurbished Fontainbleu Hotel. Yes, it sounds fabulous; it wasn’t really.

I am here attending Internet Retailer’s Web Design Conference. There had been a session scheduled for 12 p.m., but the conference organizers graciously rearanged the times so that lunch was served at noon, with the inauguration appearing on the giant overhead screens. So effectively, Obama was the lunch speaker.

The only problem was, I was filing stories when they announced the new schedule. So when I saw it was nearly noon, I stopped at the lobby bar to watch the historic event with 40 strangers. (If I’d known I was missing lunch, I’d have ordered some chicken wings.)

So I don’t really know how Obama’s speech was received by the members of the Web marketing community attending the show. But the motley crew in the Fontainbleu’s lounge gave it a hearty round of applause.
