Australia Plans Do-Not-Call Registry

The Australian government has proposed establishing a national telemarketing do-not-call registry similar to the one in place in the U.S.

The registry will apply to all telemarketers operating in Australia, as well as those overseas telemarketers who represent Australian companies. It will also include a range of enforcement options, including warnings, fines, formal directions and financial penalties.

The DNC list would cost just over $33 million ($24 million) to set up and the government has committed $17.2 million ($12.5 million) with the remainder of the costs to be met by industry.

The government will introduce legislation as soon as possible to establish the registry and create minimum standards for the behavior of telemarketers. The government expects one million registrations within the first week and four million the first year.

The registry is expected to be up and running next year.
