Mobile gaming is one of the five most popular forms of mobile content usage, according to comScore. There are, of course, differences in how popular the activity is, depending on how old the consumer is and what gender they are, as shown by data released by Compete.
Compete looked at data from July through August and saw that 20 percent of smartphone owners under 25 played mobile games multiple times a day, while 24 percent played them daily. Another 10 percent played mobile games multiple times a week, 3 percent played them once a week, 8 percent played them a few times a month and 16 percent played them once a month.
These numbers were noticeably different for smartphone owners between 25-44. For this segment, 15 percent played mobile games multiple times a day, 11 percent played daily, 19 percent played a few times a week, 5 percent played once a week, 14 percent played a few times a month and 12 percent played once a month.
For smartphone owners 45+, 9 percent played multiple times a day, 7 percent played daily, 16 percent played a few times a week, 2 percent played once a week, 11 percent played a few times a month and 13 percent played once a month.
On average, 20 percent of smartphone owners have downloaded more than 10 games. However, this number rises to 32 percent of those under 25. Strategy and Puzzles are the most popular types of games for this segment.
Compete also broke down what types of games are popular for each gender. Female mobile game players were the most likely to play puzzles (65 percent) and cards/casino games (51 percent). Many also played word games (27 percent) and strategy games (26 percent).
Males also like puzzles (45 percent) and cards/casino games (40 percent), but their preferences were more equally spread out across many categories, including strategy (30 percent), action/adventure (28 percent) and sports (17 percent).
According to comScore, 22.3 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers played games on their mobile devices in July, down 0.1 percentage points from 22.4 percent in April.
The report from comScore also showed that Google’s Android mobile platform continues to gobble up market share, finishing July with 17.0 percent of the market, up 5.0 percentage points from 12.0 percent in April. Meanwhile, RIM lost 1.8 points to finish with 39.3 percent, and Apple lost 1.3 points to finish with 23.8 percent.
