Yahoo Squashes RSS Ads

Posted on

After more than three years in beta mode, Yahoo!’s Ads in RSS program was shut down on Monday, “to focus on other more broadly used ad products for our publishing partners, such as Sponsored Search and Content Match,” according to an e-mail sent to publishers.

  • Yahoo!’s exit from this arena leaves about three major players left to play.
    • This is likely a result of some heavy dieting by the struggling company as it takes orders from its new CEO, Carol Bartz.
  • Yahoo!’s Ads in RSS service was launched in November 2005. The company has not shed much light on its reasons behind its shutdown, but it has been in trimming mode lately, shutting down Yahoo! Pets and Yahoo! Briefcase recently.
  • Content Match was also shut down in the U.K. in mid-January.
