Yahoo, AOL Show off E-Mail Makeovers

Last week, both Yahoo and AOL unveiled overhauled e-mail products.

Yahoo made its beta version of a new version of Yahoo Mail available to the general public. It resembles Microsoft’s Outlook e-mail client with its use of reading panes and a preview window. The new Yahoo Mail uses an AJAX interface that allows users to drag-and-drop e-mails into folders, and also makes use of tabs which allow users to easily navigate between individual messages, folders, and their inbox.

A new feature that will set the new Yahoo Mail apart from its counterparts is its implementation of RSS feeds in the navigation panel on the left. A default listing of RSS feeds is made available, but users can also add their own. RSS feed search and import/export capabilities will be added in the future.

The major drawback of the new Yahoo Mail is the additional loading time required for the interface to show up. This could be resolved once the new Yahoo Mail is out of beta.

It also remains to be seen whether or not Yahoo will increase its current 1GB offering to its e-mail users.

AOL unveiled My eAddress, which allows current AOL/AIM users to register and select their own .com or .net domain names in order to create up to 100 e-mail addresses. The domains will be owned by AOL. These e-mail addresses will come with 2GB of storage space, and will be available for e-mail and IM use.

If a domain is already taken, My eAddress will suggest alternatives.

“Great e-mail domains are a hot commodity, and we’re excited to be able to finally help consumers create their own truly meaningful Internet identities, and for free,” said Director of Communication Products at AOL, Roy Ben-Yoseph.
