World Online Music Sales Rise Tenfold in 2004

The number of legal sites quadrupled to more than 230 last year, while the music catalog doubled to more than 1 million songs, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents 1,450 record companies.

In addition, worldwide online music sales shot up by a factor of 10 in 2004 to more than 200 million paid-for downloaded tracks.

The IFPI added that the fight against hacking and illegal downloads has made significant progress, as consumer attitudes and copyright law has changed.
