Virginia authorities yesterday their first arrests on Thursday under the state’s tough new anti-spam law.
According to wire reports, Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore said Jeremy Jaynes had been arrested in Raleigh, N.C. on four counts of fraudulently transmitting bulk e-mail.
Officials reportedly were in negotiations for the surrender of Richard Rutowski on the same charges.
If convicted, the men could face up to five years in prison and fines of up to $2,500 on each count.
Jaynes was charged with violating the limit on the number of messages a marketer can send and falsifying routing information, according to reports. Virginia asserted jurisdiction in the case because messages were allegedly sent through computers located in the state.
