UPS has finished a seven-year, billion-dollar expansion of UPS Worldport, its global distribution network’s centerpiece. The expansion doubled the Lousiville, KY shipping firm’s sorting complex to 4 million square feet.
The renovation also included package sorting automation upgrades which increase its processing capabilities to 304,000 packages per hour. Package movement is coordinated by information coded in UPS “smart labels,” which allow computers to sort and track parcels’ movements through the system.
UPS also streamlined the number of interactions between people and parcels within the center, reducing manual package handling from six times to two.
UPS began planning the renovation in 1995, and started work on it in 1999.
