The Treasury Department has taken steps to prevent Social Security number theft by moving the number on checks mailed, according to wire reports. In its new position, it will no longer be visible through the envelope window.
According to reports, the change from Social Security numbers to a check number will begin with September payments.
The move will lessen the likelihood of Social Security numbers, which are often used as identification numbers in non-government transactions, from being appropriated for the purpose of identity theft.
