Tobacco Company Tries to Lure Celebs with Free Cigarettes

As part of a guerrilla marketing campaign to promote its new cigarettes, Freedom International, Inc. hopes to lure celebrity smokers with a free lifetime supply of cigarettes.

The company said it was seeking to “seed” its cigarettes with adult celebrities to raise the public profile of its first brand Legal. The celebs would not appear in ads, but would spend time at company sponsored events for adult smokers. So far, no stars have stepped up to take the offer, according to news reports.

This spring, actresses hung out at Manhattan bars and nightclubs smoking the new cigarettes as part of the guerrilla marketing campaign.

The ploy drew fire from anti-smoking activists.
