Thermos donated a collection of historic lunch boxes and vacuum bottles to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The display, "Taking America to Lunch," opened April 13 with appearances by June Lockhart (Lost in Space), Shirley Jones (The Partridge Family) and Meadowlark Lemon (The Harlem Globetrotters)—all of whom are featured on lunch boxes in the display. The museum's gift shop sells three commemorative lunch boxes.
"The Smithsonian sees such food containers as memory boxes, where family and school merge with American popular culture," said David Shayt, cultural history curator at the National Museum of American History, in a statement.
Rolling Meadows, IL-based Thermos will follow with a back-to-school p.r. push centered on healthy eating and food safety. Nutritionists and food-safety experts will make appearances in 10 to 15 top markets to give tips on food storage. New products, such as FUNtainer "vacuumware" and Snak 'n Spin lunch boxes with games built into the lid, get display support for back-to-school. No advertising is planned.
