According to the latest figures from Nielsen, the average Web user from a list of 10 countries spent 5:27:33 (hh:mm:ss) on social networks in February, which marked an increase of more than two hours from the same month last year.
Users in Italy spent the most time on social networks in February with an average time spent of 6:27:53 during the month. Australia followed behind with an average time spent per person of 6:25:21, while the U.S. was third with an average time of 6:02:34.
Meanwhile, the average user in the U.K. spent 5:50:56 on social networks in February, followed by Spain with an average time of 4:50:49.
Brazil trailed with an average time of 4:27:54, followed by France with 4:12:01, Germany with 3:47:24, Switzerland with 3:26:00 and Japan with 2:37:07.
Global traffic to social networks from both home and work rose to 314.5 million unique visitors in February, up 28.8 percent from 244.2 million visitors in the same month last year.
The U.S. boasted the largest unique audience of social network users in February, as it finished the month with 149.3 million users, up 29.7 percent from 115.1 million in the same month last year. In February 2008, this figure was 104.2 million users.
Facebook was the king of all online social networks in February, as it claimed 52 percent of the active social network users around the world. It also finished the month with the highest number of sessions per person with 19.16. Facebook also had the highest time per person with 5:52:00.
MySpace was second with a 15 percent reach, 6.66 sessions per users and 0:59:33 per person during February.
Twitter was third with 10 percent of the active social networking audience, and had 3.15 sessions per user and 0:12:47 per person during the month.
Classmates Online had a 5 percent reach, 3.29 sessions per person and 0:13:55 per person.
This is yet another glimpse into the enormous world of social networking. Marketers are getting the picture, as 80 percent recently told Unica that they were currently using social media or had plans to in the future.
