As Facebook gears up to unveil a revamped News Feed, Hamish McKenzie at PandoDaily wonders if Facebook Messenger is the “new Facebook.” Facebook Messenger is the top downloaded social networking iOS app today. This reflects a larger trend at play, namely the growing popularity of messenger apps like LINE, KakaoTalk and WhatsApp, not to mention Path introducing a private messaging functionality in its updated app. The mobile social networking space is heating up, and today’s mobile chat/messenger apps could very well become full-fledged mobile social networks in the near future.
“As the likes of LINE, WeChat, and KakaoTalk are proving, however, the chat aspect is inseparable from the in-built social graph, which is where the real value lies,” McKenzie writes.
