Spiegel Starts Charging Coupon Abusers

Spiegel, which recently found to alarm that customers were misusing discount coupons, has started charging the credit cards of the offenders.

But the Downer Grove, IL-based cataloger is being challenged by consumers, who have complained to the Better Business Bureau, according to a report on CNET News.com.

The Federal Trade Commission is now exploring the matter, and MasterCard has called Spiegel’s billing action “unusual,” News.com reported.

The problem began when Spiegel sent coupons for discounts of $5 to $20 to customers.

Some customers used them multiple times, although they were for one-time use only, according to News.com.

This was facilitated by the failure of Spiegel to place unique code numbers on the coupons, the report continued.

Spiegel wrote to several dozen abusers demanding payment, and informing them that it no longer wanted them as customers.
