CatalogCity.com, an Internet catalog shopping portal, has appointed Don Alvarez executive vice president finance and CFO. Alvarez comes to CatalogCity.com from Fatbrain.com, Inc., where he served as vice president and CFO. In bringing him on, Catalogcity.com president and CEO Lee Lorenzen cited Alvarez’ guiding role in FatBrain.com’s initial public offering.
Thomas Middelhoff, chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann AG, one of the world’s largest media companies, has resigned from America Online Inc.’s board of directors. Middelhoff, age 46, was elected to AOL board in May 1995, the same year Bertelsmann and America Online formed AOL Europe, a 50-50 joint venture to deliver interactive services across Europe. In explaining his decision to step down from the board, Middelhoff said that “it’s inappropriate for me to continue as a member,” due to AOL’s recent merger with Time Warner, a competitor of Bertelsmann.
InfoUSA, Omaha, NE, has appointed Arvind Jain COO and CFO of its new Internet subsidiary, businessCreditUSA.com, which offers free business credit reports. Jain most recently served as vice president, Alumina business unit at Kaiser Aluminum. He has extensive experience in corporate planning, business development and international negotiations. As advisor to Kaiser’s top management, Jain has participated in numerous acquisitions, divestitures and other public company transactions.
Interactive Brokers LLC, a New York-based electronic brokerage, has unveiled a new Web site at http://www.InteractiveBrokers.com reportedly to support its rapidly growing retail customer base. One feature is an interactive chat application whereby clients can receive live responses from the firm’s customer support desk.
