AT&T has launched a new toll-free exchange — its fourth since introducing 800 numbers in 1967 — in an effort to meet exploding demand. The Federal Communications Commission ordered that the new code, 866, be put into effect last Saturday. All four exchanges, including the 888 and 877 codes, contain eight million phone numbers. AT&T expects the next code, 844, to go into service in 2004.
Two veteran database experts have left a promising Internet firm. George Bardenheier and Elizabeth Sunny Heyer have resigned from Shoptalk, an shopping facilitator emphasizing the phone-Web connection. Bardenheier, who plans to take a sabbatical for several months, was vice president-sales. Heyer was a salesperson.
