Sharper Image Sales Returning to Pre-Razor Scooter Levels

A single trendy product, the Razor Scooter, had such an impact on 2000 Sharper Image Corp. sales that the company is presenting its financial results in pre- and post-scooter contexts.

For instance, its November sales of $42.9 million were down 18% from $52 million in November 2000. But the San Francisco-based marketer of quirky lifestyle items is quick to point out that this was after a 32% increase from the previous year.

November catalog sales, which during the Razor Scooter era had been $15.7 million, fell to $12.7 million, while total store sales dropped from $27.1 million to $24.2 million. Internet sales were off by 35%, dropping to $6 million.

When the impact of Razor Scooter sales is dropped from the November sales figures, total Sharper Image sales rose 4%, catalog sales were up 6%, Web site sales were almost identical, rising 1%, and total store sales were up 10%.
