Sharper Image Sales Down for Fourth Quarter, Year

The Sharper Image Corp generated $253.9 million during its 2005 fourth quarter, compared with $291.9 million a year ago. For the year, the San Francisco-based retailer reported $648.9 million in sales, down from $740 million. The quarter and year ended Jan. 31.

The company has not yet released its income figures. During fiscal 2005, The Sharper Image opened 19 new stores.

Catalog and direct marketing sales dropped at a higher rate than overall sales, falling from $56.1 million a year ago to $36.7 million during the fourth quarter. For the year, they fell from $$189 million to $136 million.

Internet sales in the fourth quarter slipped from $48.6 million to $46.9 million, while for the year they declined from $116.3 million to $105.9 million.

“The fourth quarter sales declines were impacted by planned lower advertising expenses and weakness in two major product categories: air purifiers and massage chairs, said chairman and CEO Richard Thalheimer in a statement.

Thalheimer continued, ” We expect sales in these two highly competitive areas to continue to see year-over-year decreases into 2006.”
