SanDisk Pushes Holiday Memory Sale in Social Media

It used to be that holiday memories meant candlelight, turkey with chestnut stuffing and Uncle Ed’s rendition of “Blue Christmas.” But today people are just as likely to be interested in “holiday memory”- that is, expanded storage capacity for their digital cameras and videocams, mobile phones and MP3 players.

And that’s why storage firm SanDisk timed a three-day online sale on memory chips for the weekend after Black Friday and used pre-sale tactics to get the word out in social media such as social networks, blogs and Twitter.

The SanDisk Cyber Weekend sale used a welcome page to gather consumer e-mail addresses before the sale’s launch on Saturday Nov. 29. When the sale began, that welcome page was swapped out for a list of the deals being offered on Flash memory cards, USB drives and small digital appliances.

In addition, SanDisk and PR firm Cohn & Wolfe used branded channels on sites such as YouTube, Blip, MetaCafe and Veo to pre-promote the sale. San Disk is already running a campaign entitled “Take More Video” on most of those sites and added three promotional videos featuring tech icon Gadget Grrl using viewers to go to the SanDisk site for special buys and stressing the promotion’s free shipping option.

A link on the SanDisk Facebook page also directed visitors to the Cyber Weekend Web site.
