San Francisco Is the Top Mobile Search City

The YP Local Insights Report for the second quarter of 2012 highlights the top growth categories in mobile search, including wedding planning and supplies, hardware stores and outdoor recreation. The report also reveals the top 10 mobile search cities, a list led by San Francisco.

According to YP, the top 10 search categories (online and mobile) in the first quarter of 2012 were:

Restaurants
Financial services
Auto repair
Real estate
Beauty services
Physicians and surgeons
Auto parts
Building contractors
Legal services
Lodging

Meanwhile, the top growth search categories (online and mobile, quarter-over-quarter) were:

Family services (+164 percent)
Wedding planning and services (+76 percent)
Pharmacies (+68 percent)
Security services (+59 percent)
Florists (+59 percent)
Construction (+49 percent)
Auto sales (+49 percent)
Auto parts (+46 percent)
Landscaping and lawn services (+40 percent)
Boats and boating (+40 percent)

The top growth categories for mobile search were wedding planning and supplies (+149 percent), hardware stores (+108 percent), outdoor recreation (+79 percent), rec centers (+71 percent), and law enforcement (+56 percent).

The top growth categories for online search were family services (+204 percent), financial services (+66 percent), florists (+66 percent), wedding planning and supplies (+65 percent), supermarkets (+61 percent).

YP also noted that searches for archery ranges rose 82 percent from January to March, which coincided with “The Hunger Games” film’s debut on March 23.

The report also listed the top mobile search cities (per capita), led by San Francisco; Lafayette, La.; Baton Rouge, La.; Orlando, Fla.; Columbia, S.C.; Birmingham, Ala.; Miami; St. Louis; West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Shreveport, La.

The top iPhone search categories in the first quarter were restaurants, theaters, lodging, bars and beauty services. The list for Android search was the same, save for financial services, not beauty services, rounding out the list.

According to comScore, nearly 110 million Americans own a smartphone, and by the end of 2012, the majority of mobile phone owners will own smartphones.
